Strawberries – Justin Emery - Somerset

Freshly picked British strawberries smothered in cream make a seasonal dessert that is incredibly simple to create, yet impossible to resist.  Savouring the sweet, juicy flesh of a strawberry grown at Follyfoot Farm is a true joy; Farm Manager Justin Emery oversees the growing process.

Location:  Follyfoot farm is situated in North Petherton, Somerset, an area renowned for early soft fruit production.  The local micro-climate provides warmth and excellent light levels, ideal for growing soft fruit.

Varieties:  Two varieties of strawberry are grown at Follyfoot Farm; Elsanta and Elsinor.  Elsanta is a delicious tasting variety that produces masses of glossy, highly aromatic strawberries with a good shelf life.  Elsinor strawberries are sweet-tasting and firm with a powerful aroma.

The growing process:  Planting takes place in February, April and June; the strawberries are picked between 60 and 90 days later.  Weather conditions are monitored and crops are regularly assessed for the presence of pests and diseases.  Strawberries thrive if the summer is a good mix of sunshine and showers, with a temperature of 18-25 ºC.

Environment:  Follyfoot Farm has a policy to protect and sustain the land and wildlife, which includes maintaining hedgerows and trees to attract a variety of birds, insects and animals.  Bees have been introduced to the farm to encourage the natural pollination of the strawberry plants.  The farm also recycles wherever possible.

QR codes on Strawberry packs

This year Pauleys have added QR (quick response) codes to the labels on our strawberries.  Using a smart phone, our customers can scan the code to take them directly to this page to discover how and where our strawberries are grown.

If you are customer and would like to feature this QR code on your menus, you can download the code here.

To achieve the best quality and availability of produce, we may sometimes need to source produce from growers other than those mentioned. In the event of British produce not being available or not meeting the required specification, we will source from an alternative origin to match our high quality standards.
