Ian Critchley - Asparagus - Evesham
Without doubt, the most anticipated gem of the spring season is British asparagus. Deliciously nutty, creamy and tender - asparagus is a wonderful addition to seasonal spring menus. The asparagus season typically only lasts for 8 weeks, so embrace this seasonal delight while it is available.
Ian Critchley has been growing asparagus for more than 12 years at Sandfields Farm in the Vale of Evesham. The area is renowned for asparagus growing due to the presence of ideal conditions. The mild climate and light sandy soil help to encourage the early growth of the wonderful green spears. Ian explains the key to producing fantastic quality asparagus is “light land with good drainage”.
Ian planted his first asparagus crowns 11 years ago, these crowns are still producing asparagus today. New crowns are planted every year; Ian began with 25 acres and now farms in excess of 400 acres. In addition to asparagus growing, Ian is kept busy throughout the year as he also produces other vegetables including runner beans. Dedication is essential for asparagus growers as the fields are tended and kept weed free all year round, but the season lasts for only a matter of weeks. Crowns must be planted for three years before they produce asparagus.
Warm evenings are ideal for advancing the growth of the asparagus; Ian knows that during these times he must keep a keen eye on the asparagus as the spears can grow rapidly in the right conditions. When the spears reach the optimum size, they are carefully hand cut before being chilled and transported to Pauleys.
The preservation of the environment is important to Ian and he carries out initiatives such as introducing plants to encourage bees and leaving areas to provide natural habitats for wildlife. Sandfields farm is home to an array of wildlife including rare ground-nesting Lapwing birds and hares.
To achieve the best quality and availability of produce, we may sometimes need to source produce from growers other than those mentioned. In the event of British produce not being available or not meeting the required specification, we will source from an alternative origin to match our high quality standards.
